Three men are currently seeking the presidential nomination of the Reform Party of the United States of America: small business owner Andre Barnett, Earth Intelligence Network CEO Robert Steele, and former college football coach Robby Wells. Wikinews reached out to these candidates and asked each of them five questions about their campaigns. There were no space limits placed on the responses, and no candidate was exposed to another’s responses before making their own. The answers are posted below in unedited form for comparison of the candidates.

The Reform Party is a United States third party that was founded in 1995 by industrialist Ross Perot. Perot ran as the party’s first presidential nominee in 1996, and won over eight percent of the popular vote, the highest percentage for a third party candidate since. In 1998, professional wrestler Jesse Ventura ran on the Reform Party ticket and was elected Governor of Minnesota. The party fell in prominence during the lead-up to the 2000 presidential election when it was plagued by infighting between ideological factions. In 2000, paleoconservative Pat Buchanan won the presidential nomination, and went on to receive only 0.4 percent of the popular vote in the general election. In 2004, the party opted to endorse consumer advocate Ralph Nader, but ended the year nearly bankrupt. In 2008, Ted Weill won the party’s presidential nomination, but appeared on the ballot in only one state and won a total of 481 votes.

The party is currently trying to rebuild and has opened several new state chapters. They will attempt to appear on the ballot in more states for the 2012 presidential election. The party is expected to nominate its presidential ticket during the National Convention this summer.

Farmers hunt for missing bull semen

Authorities are looking for USD$75,000 in frozen bull semen stolen Sunday from liquid nitrogen tanks at a farm in Frederick County, Maryland. Eric Fleming, the owner, says the semen took 4 to 5 years to collect from 40 to 50 bulls. He had planned to sell the semen at an upcoming Denver cattle show.

The collection and storage of semen can be a very profitable business—the ease of transportation reduces the costs normally associated with insemination, namely the transport of bull and cow to one another. Collection can be tricky, however, as bulls do not always produce as expected and the process is not particularly easy.

“I will give a nice fat reward for any information on semen that was stolen from my tank today,” Fleming posted to a livestock breeder’s message board. “It was a mother load of semen.”

New method of displaying time patented

An American inventor has patented a pair of new time formats with a footprint less than 50% of that of conventional four-digit time. The more unusual of the two new formats, called “TWELV”, dispenses with numerals altogether. In place of clock hands or digits, the new clock uses color to convey the hour and a moon image to convey the minute, which moon slowly grows throughout the course of an hour from a narrow crescent to a full-fledged circle.

The second and more approachable of the new formats retains numerical digits to indicate the minute but uses colors to convey the hour.

Early critics question whether the aesthetic benefits of the moon-clock will be sufficient to encourage users to learn the color-based time-telling system. However, the size advantages of the new system may make it particularly suitable for mobile applications, particularly cell phones, wearable computers, and head-mounted displays.

On October 14, 2008, Canadians will be heading to the polls for the federal election. New Democratic Party candidate Don Davies is standing for election in the riding of Vancouver Kingsway.

A lawyer, he has spent the last 25 years fighting for human rights. A two-time student government representative, Davies was involved in the anti-apartheid, third world and peace movements. Admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1989, Davies and family moved to Vancouver in 1991, where he became the Director of Legal Resources for Teamsters Canada (Local 31), the next year. He is a long-time volunteer for children’s charity Variety, is Chair of the Parent Advisory Council at Mount Pleasant school, and a Director of the Meridian Cultural Society, among other things.

Wikinews contacted Don Davies, to talk about the issues facing Canadians, and what they and their party would do to address them. Wikinews is in the process of contacting every candidate, in every riding across the country, no matter their political stripe. All interviews are conducted over e-mail, and interviews are published unedited, allowing candidates to impart their full message to our readers, uninterrupted.

The riding is vacant, after Conservative Minister of International Trade David Emerson’s resignation. Emerson was elected in 2004 as a Liberal, serving as the Minister of Industry. Two weeks after re-election in 2006, he crossed the floor to join then-new Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who had won a minority government. Emerson was the first MP in Canadian history to cross the floor before a new government was sworn in. He has stepped down, after pressure from other parties.

Besides Davies, major party candidates include Liberal Wendy Yuan, Conservative Salomon Rayek, and Green Doug Warkentin. Also putting their hat in the ring are Matt Kadioglu (Libertarian), Kimball Cariou (Communist), and Donna Peterson (Marxist-Leninist).

5 Points To Consider Before Buying An Electric Trolling Motor

How on earth do you make a decision on which trolling motor to buy when there is such a huge veriaty to choose from. Whether you need one for your kayack or a 20 ft tournament fishing craft the choices available can be pretty daunting, especially if you have not owned one before.

Todays motors are generally easy to install on almost all types of craft so the only decision you have to make is which one will suit you best for your particular boating needs.

Listed here are five important points to consider before you end up buying one that may end up a dissapointment.

Your Environment

Ask yourself were you will you end up using it the most – in salt water or fresh water.You cannot use a fresh water motor in salt water.

Because I live near the coast, I own a salt water motor that I can also use in fresh water lakes and rivers when fishing inland.

The salt water motors are more corrosion resistant because of the harsher condition they work in, but do cost a little more.

Which Mount

The size and type of boat you have will help decide if it is a transom or bow mount trolling motor you require. Usually with a small craft under14 foot, a motor fixed to the transom works well. For bigger boats or superior maneuverability a bow mount is installed but it must have space up front where you can fix a housing bracket.

Thrust

The term “pounds of thrust” describes roughly how much power is required to move your boat through the water. Without the right amount of thrust you will find that in rough or weedy conditions your boat will go nowhere. Because so many factors can influense your boats performance the rule of thumb is to buy one that may seem to be somewhat overpowered for your boat.

The downside of a bigger motor is that you will need more batteries so a 12 volt system is the cheapest to buy. However it will not have the endurance and thrust of a 24 volt or 36 volt system. Usually a high thrust 12 volt trolling motor for boats less than 18 feet is adequate.

Shaft length

If your shaft is to short,then in rough conditions the propellor may not get enough bite in the water. Also if the shaft is to long, it could be a problem in shallow areas when continually hitting the bottom. Factors influencing your decision will include hull shape, bow or stern height and how many people on average fish from the boat.

Kinds Of Control

These trolling motors can be hand or foot steered. For a bow mount motor steering with a foot control is by far the most popular method. Today you can steer your boat electronically using cool features like auto pilot, co pilot and GPS pilot.

Trolling motors are designed for all kinds of boating activities. Pollution free they are great for the environment adding great new dimensions to your boating and fishing experiences.
