US Senate finance committee to vote on health care bill

US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said that the Senate Finance Committee will vote on a sweeping health care reform bill next Tuesday. US President Barack Obama has made clear that extending health insurance coverage to as many Americans as possible is his top domestic priority.

Republican lawmakers, however, are still overwhelmingly opposed to the bill, saying it is too expensive and would expand the role of government in people’s health care.

Obama and his fellow Democrats in the Senate received some good news late Wednesday from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, which put the total cost of the Senate Finance Committee’s health care bill at $829 billion over the next decade, below Obama’s stated goal of $900 billion. The budget watchdog organization also said the health care bill would help reduce the federal budget deficit over the next ten years.

Harry Reid said he believed health care reform was moving forward. “And so today we stand closer than ever to fulfilling that fundamental promise, one for which we have fought for more than 60 years,” he said.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, however said that the cost estimate was “irrelevant”, because the final bill that will actually emerge from both houses of Congress is likely to look very different and cost a lot more. “What matters is that the final bill will cost about a trillion dollars, vastly expand the role of government in people’s health care decisions, increase premiums and limit choice,” McConnell said.

McConnell said Republicans favor a step by step approach to health care reform, focusing on prevention and wellness programs and dealing with the high costs of malpractice insurance doctors have to pay due to fears of excessive lawsuits.

Under the Finance Committee’s bill, US residents would be required to get health insurance or face a penalty, and insurance companies would face tough new regulations. For example, insurance companies could no longer reject coverage for people due to pre-existing conditions.

The Senate Finance Committee is likely to pass the bill, which will then have to be merged with one passed by the Senate health committee before it goes to the full Senate floor for debate.

As of 10:00 p.m EST November 8, 2006, the Democratic Party is projected to have gained control of both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate in the 2006 United States general elections. MSNBC projects that the Democrats now control 234 seats in the House of Representatives, 16 more seats than the 218 needed to control the House of Representatives as all 435 seats were up for election. In the Senate, where the balance of power is closer, one-third of all seats were up for grab. As of 10:00 p.m. EST, AP and Reuters were projecting that the Democrats had picked up all six seats they needed to retake the Senate, including the seats of incumbents Rick Santorum (Penn.), Lincoln Chafee (R.I.), Jim Talent (Missouri), Mike DeWine (Ohio), John Tester (Montana), and Jim Webb (VA). The Tester victory by less than 3,000 votes was projected at approximately 2 p.m. EST after the State of Montana announced the results of overnight recounts. Democrat Jim Webb has prevailed in that race by slightly more than 7,000 votes, though his opponent has not conceded and a recount may still occur.

How To Write A Personal Statement For Your Thesis}

Posted on Sunday, March 28, 2021 in Insurance

Submitted by: Albert Barkley

Graduate schools, fellowships, grants, and other competitive programs often require each applicant to submit a short essay about her history and goals. These essays are sometimes written in response to very specific questions. Theyre written in response to a generic prompt. In both cases, the good personal statement carefully balances its authors history and aspirations. The personal statement is a chance to communicate to your reviewers information about your interests, skills, experiences and goals that is not readily apparent from your resume and transcript.

Start by examining the prompt. Applicants are asked very specific questions about why they are applying to a particular program and what, specifically, qualifies them to be part of that program. Think about the question youve been asked. Decide how your experience is different, interesting, or special. Personal statements succeed when they are specific. Research the program. The program youre applying to is also unique in some ways, and you should make it clear that you chose it carefully from among its competitors. Think about how your goals will best be served by this particular fellowship, internship, or university. Again, be specific. Make your goals clear. Just as your past is interesting and specific, so is your future.

Once youve thought about your history and your goals, start writing. Its often very tempting to put this off. Writing a personal statement is stressful. But its important to start writing as soon as possible especially because youll be revising again and again. Show how your personal history relates to your goals, and how youre a good fit for this particular program. If your first attempt looks halting and a little half-baked dont worry. The first draft is supposed to look this way.Once you feel the personal statement says what you want it to say, show it to somebody. The Writing Center can be useful here. It might also be useful to get feedback from a professional in your field. Many personal statement conventions are discipline-specific.

Things to Include in Personal Statement:

Origins of your interest in a particular field: This could be a book you read, lecture you attended, or experience you had said. It can also be hiking with your family in the summers as the source of your interest in forest eco-systems. Ways in which you have developed your interest: Additional reading, experiments, internships, course work, summer jobs, science fairs, travel experiences, writing projects, etc. Special skills you have developed relevant to the planned research.

This could be general knowledge of a field acquired through reading and study, or special practical skills. Knowledge or skills that you hope to acquire through participation in this research opportunity. Future plans and goals character traits, talents, or extra-curricular activities outside the field that help to qualify you. If you are particularly tenacious about overcoming obstacles, creative at problem-solving. Adaptable to unfamiliar circumstances, or just great at organizing teams of people. These qualities can be mentioned as relevant to the research experience.

Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers are used extensively throughout the process industry and as such a basic understanding of their design, construction and performance is important to the practising engineer. The objective of this paper is to provide a concise review of the key issues involved in their thermal design without having to refer to the extensive literature available on this topic. Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers are intended for heating or cooling process fluids, they are for example suitable for closed circuit cooling of electrical equipment using demineralised water and for cooling water soluble oil solutions in quenching tanks.

The shell side usually contains the process fluid and the tube side water from the town mains or a cooling tower, or an ethylene glycol solution from a chiller unit. Some of the situations its process through revise arrangement, before known to consult them. The author may be claims nothing shows originality but believes that the format and contents will provide a compreheve introduction to the subject and enable the reader to achieve rapid and meaningful results. The optimum thermal design of a shell and tube heat exchanger and its involves the consideration of many interacting design parameters.

Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers Advantages:

1.Its compact design

2.Less expensive

3.Higher operating temperatures and pressures in systems.

4.Pressure drop across a tube cooler is less

5.Tube leaks are easily located and plugged

6.Tubular coolers in refrigeration system can act as receiver also.

7.Most versatile in terms of types of service

8.Widest range of allowable design pressures and temperatures

9.Rugged mechanical construction

Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers Process:

1. Process fluid assignments to shell side or tube side.

2. Selection of stream temperature specifications.

3. Setting shell side and tube side velocity limits.

4. Setting shell side and tube side pressure drop design limits.

5. Selection of heat transfer models and fouling coefficients for shell side and tube side.

Software Design for Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers:

Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers having lot software design and rating range values available including AspenBJAC, HTFS and CC-THERM, which insist the designer to make up the effects of many other attracting design and achieve optimum thermal design. These design packages are supported by extensive component physical property databases and thermodynamic models.

It must be stressed that software convergence and optimisation routines will not necessarily achieve a practical and economic design without the designer forcing parameters in an intuitive way.

It is recommended that the design be checked by running the model in the rating mode. It is the intention of this paper to provide the basic information and fundamentals in a concise format to achieve this objective.

The paper is structured on Chemstations CC-THERM software which enables design and rating to be carried out within a total process model using CHEMCAD steady state modelling software.

Polish exercise book advertisement copies Wikipedia content, violates copyright

Polish exercise book advertisement copies Wikipedia content, violates copyright
Posted on Friday, March 26, 2021 in Uncategorized
This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Friday, October 24, 2008

On August 21, the Polish weekly Przekrój published an advertisement for Dan-Mark exercise books, bearing the logo of 4fun.tv, a Polish music/interactive TV station. Part of the advertisement contained a definition of the word “exercise book”. The wording looked familiar, and Wikinews consulted Wikipedia, the collaborative online encyclopedia.

Upon seeing the Wikipedia definition, it appeared that the entry quoted in the promotional material was identical to the initial two paragraphs of the relevant Wikipedia entry.

Freelance reporters for the Polish Wikinews decided to find out the reason for such a similarity and whether either of the texts (the advertisement’s or Wikipedia’s) might be a case of copyright violation.

The reporters contacted a Jaros?aw Janas, Creative Director of 4fun.tv., where the ad appeared. His reply included the following claim:

The text of the definition has been taken from an encyclopedic publication which is older than 50 years and therefore not subject to copyright protection. The fact of coincidental similarity cannot be considered equal to plagiarism, because as we all know Wikipedia is a place which publishes texts and definitions that have already existed in different forms in other publications released before.

Copyright on text does not last for fifty years as claimed by Janas, but for 70 years after the death of the author.

To investigate the authenticity of the above claims, Wikinews asked the main author of the two paragraphs in question, Wikipedian Julo, about the sources used to write the entry. He confirmed that he had written the text in question, and not copied it from an encyclopedic publication as claimed by Jana.

It is therefore impossible that both Julo and the people responsible for the exercise book advertisement have used the same uncopyrighted encyclopedia, thus coincidentally creating identical texts. The reporters also noted that the first draft of the introduction to the article was written by WaldemarWolskiHuta (February 2006). Afterward the text had undergone some modifications by Julo (September 2006), as well as Picus viridis and Beno (March 2008). However, the text presented in the press promotional material, which – according to 4fun.tv – came from an old-print encyclopedia is identical to the Wikipedia entry after the changes mentioned above had been made. Julo added that he was still alive, together with the other authors of the article in question who constituted the group of the copyright co-holders. This naturally led to a conclusion that neither 50 nor 70 years could have passed since their death. He left 4fun.tv’s actions with a comment that although the contents he and the other Wikimedians had made public and free, they are far from making them available in any “free style”, but under a specified license.

In follow up messages to Jaros?aw Janas, Wikinews reporters confronted the creative director over his seemingly inaccurate claims.

Wikinews was told in a reply that 4fun.tv would ignore the claims unless they see permission from the author of the original content to investigate this story. They were also informed that further e-mails without any specifics sent by the reporter would be qualified as spam. 4fun.tv’s creative director further added that he found the reporter’s picture on the Internet and asked how the person would feel if this picture was to appear on billboards or press releases that advertised the TV station.

Wikipedia does allow copying of its content under certain conditions. The encyclopedia’s content is released under the GNU Free Documentation License, which means that it can be copied, modified, and used commercially and non-commercially – under the conditions that the license’s text is included with the copied content and the five main authors are mentioned. If a part of the article is used, like in the example quoted in this news story, a “right to quote”, recognized by Polish law, may be used. In such a case it suffices to mention the source of the text (Polish Wikipedia) and the author of the excerpt. 4fun.tv met none of these conditions, meaning that copyright has been violated.

Over a year ago Polish Wikinews reported on a similar problem, regarding the use of free-licensed photographs. Since that time such “borrowings” have become less frequent, however photos are still being used in discordance with the license. Journalists have gotten used to citing sources, e.g. Wikipedia, although licensing conditions require attributing the actual author, not the source. So instead of attributing John Doe for his contribution, agencies like Polska Agencja Prasowa (Polish Press Agency) are attributing the source, Wikipedia.

In early September 2008 a similar situation occurred in relation to the Polish edition of Wiktionary. Gazeta Wyborcza, a Polish daily, published an IKEA advertisement, on the opening page of which an almost word-for-word Wiktionary entry was placed; additionally the advertisement used the characteristic MediaWiki layout. The reference to the external source used was missing.

In April 2008, an example of an Australian professor was cited; the scientist, in a reply to a news story, quoted a Wikipedia definition almost word-for-word. The same professor condemned the use of Wikipedia in his previous press appearances.

In 2005 Wikipedia material was discovered in the German weekly magazine Der Spiegel, which acknowledged its fault and published appropriate apologies in place of the article in the online edition.

Frontline magazine in 2007 was found using an image from Wikipedia without proper credit. When pointed out the magazine acknowledged the failing and a correction was promptly given in the subsequent issue.

Risks And Complications Of Ovarian Cysts

by

Andrew Bailey

Understanding ovarian cysts:

Ovarian cysts are fluid filled sacks, which are formed within the ovary. Cysts, which are bigger than two centimeters, are formally diagnosed as ovarian cysts. Many ovarian cysts are functional in nature. That is, they are beginning and rarely ever cause complications. However in some cases, the cysts may develop certain complications. Risks and complications of ovarian cysts depend on the type of cyst and the stage of treatment. Some types of risks complications, which are associated with ovarian cysts, include the following. 1.Ruptured ovarian cyst: This is one the most serious form of complication. Ruptured ovarian cyst can lead to internal bleeding and in some cases it can be very dangerous. Ruptured ovarian cyst can cause hemorrhage, which requires immediate medical attention. 2.Ovarian torsion: Sometimes, there is also twisting of the ovary, which can lead to infertility. Ovarian torsion may disturb blood supply to the ovary as well. This leads to another complication called as ovarian necrosis, which leads inflammation and septic shock 3.Peritonitis: Pertitonitis is the inflammation of the mucus membrane. As this membrane lines the abdomen cavity, it can cause excruciating pain and in some cases the resulting complications can be life threatening. 4.Infertility: Infertility caused by ovarian cysts can be temporary or permanent depending upon the extent of the damage. Hence, women suffering from ovarian cysts and those desirous of starting a family should take ovarian cysts really seriously. 5.Cancer: In rare but significant instances, ovarian cysts may even turn cancerous. The patient will then require the usual cancer treatment along with surgery, where generally both the ovaries are removed. Besides these serious complications and risks, ovarian cysts also lead to excruciating pain and hormonal imbalance. This can affect the mental and emotional well being of the patient as well. However, conventional medicine very rarely pays attention to the mental and emotional complications that may develop because of ovarian cysts. The treatment options can cause many side effects like loss of fertility, weight gain, and reoccurrence of stronger cysts. Therefore, many women find it difficult to cope with the demands of the conventional treatment, which can worsen an already difficult condition. Hence, to overcome the risks and complications of ovarian cysts along with the disease, you will need a, more comprehensive and holistic approach. Holistic approach is very effective as it treats the root cause of the condition and not the symptoms. Symptoms are attractive propositions to treat as relief in symptoms give a false sense of security. However, holistic approach shatters this conventional thinking by clearly eliminating the root cause. Therefore, holistic approach can not only treat ovarian cysts, but can also prevent the risks and complications of ovarian cysts in the bargain.

This article is based on the book, “Ovarian Cysts No More” by Mary Parker. Mary is an author, researcher, nutritionist and health consultant who dedicated her life to creating the ultimate holistic ovarian cyst solution guaranteed to permanently cure all types of ovarian cysts and dramatically improve the overall quality of your life, naturally, without the use prescription medication or surgery, and without any side effects.
