Two bomb blasts kill at least 17 in Istanbul, Turkey

Two bombs detonated in the Güngören district of Istanbul, Turkey Sunday evening, killing at least 17 people and wounding over 150. The neighborhood targeted is mainly residential, and the victims were civilians. At least five of those killed were children, according to local officials.

This bombing was the worst terrorist attack in Istanbul since the 2003 Istanbul Bombings, in which truck bombs exploded outside two Istanbul synagogues, killing 23 and wounding more than 300. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the 2003 attack.

The initial explosion caused little damage, but attracted crowds of onlookers. The second more lethal blast occurred 10 minutes later, about 50 metres away.

“After the first explosion, I rushed outside to check on my two sons, found both of them. But my elder son insisted on going back to find his father,” said Nimet Arslan to International Herald Tribune. Following the second bomb, she said, “a dark smoke filled the air and all I could see or hear was people screaming.” The elder son suffered a broken leg.

Turkish President Abdullah Gül said in a statement, “Nothing can be achieved by terror, violently claiming lives of the innocent. These attacks show the inhumanity and misery of the assailants.”

It is not yet clear who is responsible, but Turkish authorities suspect the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a Kurdish separatist group. “Of course, there are links with the separatist organization,” the governor of Istanbul province, Muammer Güler said, “It’s surely a terror attack, there’s no doubt.” This follows a recent shooting attack on the United States consulate in Istanbul. The US embassy is in Ankara.

On Sunday, the Turkish military announced that its fighter jets had raided twelve PKK settlements in Northern Iraq, which the PKK uses as a base to launch attacks on Turkey, raising speculation of PKK involvement in this attack. However Zubeyir Aydar, a senior Kurdish militant, denied any involvement in the attacks in a statement to a pro-PKK news agency.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdo?an visited the site on Monday, calling for calm and nationwide solidarity.

On October 14, 2008, Canadians will be heading to the polls for the federal election. New Democratic Party candidate Don Davies is standing for election in the riding of Vancouver Kingsway.

A lawyer, he has spent the last 25 years fighting for human rights. A two-time student government representative, Davies was involved in the anti-apartheid, third world and peace movements. Admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1989, Davies and family moved to Vancouver in 1991, where he became the Director of Legal Resources for Teamsters Canada (Local 31), the next year. He is a long-time volunteer for children’s charity Variety, is Chair of the Parent Advisory Council at Mount Pleasant school, and a Director of the Meridian Cultural Society, among other things.

Wikinews contacted Don Davies, to talk about the issues facing Canadians, and what they and their party would do to address them. Wikinews is in the process of contacting every candidate, in every riding across the country, no matter their political stripe. All interviews are conducted over e-mail, and interviews are published unedited, allowing candidates to impart their full message to our readers, uninterrupted.

The riding is vacant, after Conservative Minister of International Trade David Emerson’s resignation. Emerson was elected in 2004 as a Liberal, serving as the Minister of Industry. Two weeks after re-election in 2006, he crossed the floor to join then-new Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who had won a minority government. Emerson was the first MP in Canadian history to cross the floor before a new government was sworn in. He has stepped down, after pressure from other parties.

Besides Davies, major party candidates include Liberal Wendy Yuan, Conservative Salomon Rayek, and Green Doug Warkentin. Also putting their hat in the ring are Matt Kadioglu (Libertarian), Kimball Cariou (Communist), and Donna Peterson (Marxist-Leninist).

For more information, visit the campaign’s official website, listed below.

This Saturday at 11 am, Davies will host NDP leader Jack Layton in the Commodore Ballroom at “rally4change”.

Kennel Cough – A Cause For Concern?

Posted on Sunday, July 12, 2020 in Dog Rescue

byadmin

Any reputable dog boarding facility in Ft. Lauderdale will insist on vaccinations. The main health concern involved in boarding your dog is kennel cough. What is kennel cough? Is it a genuine cause for concern? How can you prevent it? Learn the facts before boarding your dog in Ft. Lauderdale. What is Kennel Cough?

Kennel cough is an upper respiratory infection caused either by bacteria or a virus. Think of it as the common cold in dogs. The most common cause is from the bacteria “Bordetella bronchiseptica”.

What Happens when a Dog has Kennel Cough?

The lining of the dog’s trachea and bronchial tubes become inflamed resulting in a dry, hacking cough. The sound is similar to that of a dog hacking up something caught in the back of their throat. In general, other than this cough and perhaps a white, frothy material being coughed up, the dog is in good health with a normal temperature.

Is Kennel Cough Contagious?

Kennel cough is highly contagious. It is contracted via the air and takes approximately 3 to 10 days to incubate.

Treatment

In general, Kennel Cough will pass on its own within 1 to 2 weeks. As long as your dog has no other symptoms other than the dry cough, the veterinarian will most likely send them home without medication. In order to facilitate the healing process, keep your dog warm and reduce stress. When walking your dog, switch to a harness rather than their collar. This will aid in alleviating the irritation caused by the cough. Your dog should be provided with plenty of water and softer food is recommended due to their irritated throats.

Sometimes the veterinarian will prescribe a cough suppressant or steroids. Antibiotics are often provided in cases where the cough is severe or in animals with compromised immune systems.

How do I Prevent Kennel Cough?

Many dog boarding facilities in Ft. Lauderdale require that your dog is vaccinated against kennel cough. Generally, this is performed once a year. Make sure that the dog is given their up to date vaccine at least a couple of weeks before boarding.

Even with vaccinations though, if you are boarding your dog in Ft. Lauderdale, there is a risk that they can still contract kennel cough. Dog boarding facilities and resorts take every precaution to keep each and every pet healthy and happy during their stay. However, every sickness cannot be prevented. Ensuring your dog is vaccinated and healthy before boarding in Ft. Lauderdale is the best protection you can provide.

Four arrested in three Naperville, Illinois prostitution stings

Four arrested in three Naperville, Illinois prostitution stings
Posted on Friday, July 10, 2020 in Uncategorized

Monday, March 15, 2010

An undercover investigation by Naperville, Illinois law enforcement has led to the arrest last Thursday of four people allegedly involved in prostitution. The stings came after police received tips that people were using websites like Craigslist and Backpage.com to sell sexual performances in Naperville hotels.

Patricia H. Scoleri of Naperville was arrested after an unidentified neighbor observed consistently suspicious activity at Scoleri’s home. Traffic was unusually heavy and consisted mostly of luxury cars in an otherwise quiet, middle-class neighborhood. Also, the visitors were mainly middle-aged men, and an odd string of lavender-colored lights were hung on the front window.

Police say Scoleri worked alone. She was arrested at 2 p.m. local time (2000 UTC) and is charged with violation of anti-prostitution laws, anti-cannabis laws, and the Massage Licensing Act. She apparently has four children, but the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has neither contacted her nor received a police report on her.

The second sting occurred at 5:30 p.m the same day (2330 UTC) and resulted in the arrest of Chicago resident Tonya M. Adams. She is charged with prostitution and driving without a license. Another sting about an hour later resulted in the arrests of Jessica M. Walley, a Skokie resident, and Mark A. Williams, a self-admitted Schaumburg gang member. “Walley was charged with prostitution and unlawful possession of cannabis. Williams was charged with pimping, obstructing a peace officer, driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance,” reports WBBM News Radio 780.

All four suspects are free, having paid the required ten percent of their $1,000 bail. They may face additional charges related to crack cocaine discovered during the police investigation. Arraignment is scheduled for next month at the DuPage County Circuit Courthouse in Wheaton.

Former NZ Prime Minister confirmed as head of UNDP

Thursday, April 2, 2009

Former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark has been appointed as head of the United Nations Development Program.

The appointment follows a unanimous vote by the UN General Assembly yesterday. Clark will take up the role by April 20, replacing current UNDP Administrator Kemal Dervis.

Clark is reportedly eager for the role, comparing it to winning her first election and becoming Prime Minister. “I guess this is another of those moments,” she said.

The UNDP gives training and advice to developing countries to spur global development and to help them meet the Millennium Development Goals. It has offices in 166 countries and an annual budget of around US$5 billion. Its Administrator is the third highest ranking member of the United Nations after the United Nations Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General.

Clark has a long political career, having been first elected to Parliament in 1981. She was New Zealand’s first elected woman Prime Minister, serving for three terms between 1999 and 2008. She became leader of the social-democratic New Zealand Labour Party in 1993, and led it until her defeat in the 2008 general election.

She has previously held a number of Cabinet portfolios, including Health, Housing, Conservation, and Arts, Culture and Heritage. In January 2008 Clark won the United Nations Environment Programme Champions of the Earth award in recognition of her government’s promotion of sustainability initiatives. In January 2009 she was recognised by the New Zealand Herald as the Greatest Living New Zealander.

Clark’s appointment is expected to lead to a by-election in her Mt Albert electorate.

Condos In Beautiful Rivera Cuale In Old Town Puerto Vallarta Mexico

Posted on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 in Furniture

What’s wonderful about the 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 kitchen condominium for sale at Mr-Vallarta.com? A better question might be, What’s not wonderful about this fabulous property?!

The town of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and the surrounding Mexican towns dotting the Pacific coastline, are growing in their popularity as places where Americans and Canadians can come to retire or even just relocate to escape the hustle-and-bustle of North America’s more developed nations. With the low cost of living in Mexico, expatriates can live a lifestyle that they never would have dreamed of if they had stayed within their home countries. Over 500,000 retirees have already made Mexico their new home; why not follow in their footsteps?

Natural Beauty in Every Direction

With a view of the beach out one window and a view of the mountains out the other, the condominiums in the Rivera Cuale development offer all the luxury a person could want.

Let’s start with Banderas Bay, the natural feature that has made Puerto Vallarta such a popular destination. As the largest natural bay in Mexico, Banderas Bay has sparkling blue water filled with dolphins, whales and fish.

The average temperature in Puerto Vallarta is 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and the sun shines 322 days out of 365. This picture-perfect weather means that every day is a day to go to the beach to go swimming, snorkeling or just to soak up the sun. Scuba diving and kayaking enthusiasts will also find plenty of ways to explore the ocean and surrounding freshwater lakes. Deep sea and freshwater fishing are also popular activities in the Banderas Bay area. As you explore the beaches in and around Puerto Vallarta, you’ll understand why the Bay of Banderas has won several awards from tourist organizations.

Perfect weather might also mean playing tennis or golf, depending upon your preference. Puerto Vallarta has a surprising number of tennis clubs, classes and workshops happening each year. As for golfing, there are six world-class golfing facilities within the Banderas Bay area, along with three exclusive resorts a few hours to the south.

The oldest golf course in Puerto Vallarta is located at the Flamingos Hotel. Recently renovated, the course has been attracting golfers to the area for more than two decades. Jack Nicklaus designed two of the golf courses in the area one at Punta de Mita and one of the Vista Vallarta courses. It was at this latter course where the World Golf Championship was recently played. For golfers who really like a challenge, try out the El Tigre Golf Course, which comes with traps in 13 out of the 18 holes.

When you get tired of going to the beach and playing tennis or golf, you can always take a tour into the nearby Sierra Madre Mountains. The mountains and jungles provide excellent eco-tours for those who want to learn more about the flora and fauna of the area.

Puerto Vallarta’s Old Town

When you go home to a Rivera Cuale condominium after a long day at the beach or on the golf course, you’ll be going home to Puerto Vallarta’s Old Town area. Many of the newer resort hotels and fancy shopping plazas are located to the north in Nuevo Vallarta, but Old Town retains Puerto Vallarta’s traditional Mexican colonial town feeling and charm.

Cobblestone streets filled with outdoor cafes, street vendors and local artisans give Old Town Puerto Vallarta an authentic, laid-back Mexican atmosphere. Many of the shops there are still locally owned by Mexican families, perfect for the expatriate who wants to support and honor the traditional local culture.

Old Town also happens to be a convenient place to travel from. From the Rivera Cuale development, it’s easy to get anywhere you want to go. Connecting to the highway from Old Town is easy; from there, you can get to the airport, to the beaches of Nayarit or to one of the nearby seaside towns.

Summary

No matter what lifestyle you’re looking for, you’ll be able to find it in the Rivera Cuale condominiums in Puerto Vallarta. Do you want luxury? The spacious condo with marble and granite counters, tiled bathrooms and beautiful views will offer you just that. Do you want peace and quiet? Old Town Puerto Vallarta has all the charm of an authentic Mexican seaside town with none of the intensity or activity of a big city. Do you want beaches? You’ll find some of the best beaches in the world along the Banderas Bay horseshoe. Do you want mountains? The Sierra Madre range will meet your needs.

Woman returns home with Christmas turkey, a month after setting out

Woman returns home with Christmas turkey, a month after setting out
Posted on Sunday, July 5, 2020 in Uncategorized

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

A Scottish woman who set out before Christmas to purchase a turkey finally made it home on Monday, after being cut off by snow for a month. Kay Ure left the Lighthouse Keeper’s cottage on Cape Wrath, at the very northwest tip of Great Britain, in December. She was heading to Inverness on a shopping trip.

However on her return journey heavy snow and ice prevented her husband, John, from travelling the last 11 miles to pick her up. She was forced to wait a month in a friend’s caravan, before the weather improved and the couple could finally be reunited.

They were separated not just for Christmas and New Year, but also for Mr Ure’s 58th birthday. With no fresh supplies, he was reduced to celebrating with a tin of baked beans. He also ran out of coal, and had to feed the couple’s six springer spaniels on emergency army rations.

“It’s the first time we’ve been separated”, said Mr Ure in December. “We’ve been snowed in here for three weeks before, so we are well used to it and it’s quite nice to get a bit of peace and quiet.”
