Top 10 Cities for Budget Travel in Europe

by

bronparkson

Everyone knows travel in Europe is notoriously expensive for the budget traveler right? Or is it just a case of a few expensive cities having become representative of all Europe?

Even exorbitant Oslo has its free attractions and cheap eats if you know where to look. But this list of the cheapest cities in Europe will tell you which are the best places to go this summer in your gap year or backpacker budget. And not only because the dollar is doing really well, and airfares are the lowest they have been in years! Youll see, as expected, that all the cities on this list are in Eastern Europe. Take this opportunity to explore the unique cultures of Eastern Europe!

10. Zagreb, Croatia

zagreb-croatiaImage Source: Croatia Week

It is possible to enjoy this little Croatian town on the way to Plitvice National Park for less than $35 a day! Fantastic isnt it? While the tourist herds head to the countrys beach resorts, you could go against the flow (with lots of other people) to charming old Zagreb. This city is like Prague, but one of the cheapest cities in Europe.

Zagreb is great for browsing museums, strolling the squares, drinking coffee in cafes, enjoying theater and cinema, and swimming in the lake. If you travel in Europe in winter, with prices slashed even more, you could enjoy skiing at Mt. Medvednica.

Warsaw, Poland

Expect to spend less than $35 a day in Warsaw too. The Polish capital is one of the cheapest cities in Europe. Plus its a bright and blossoming place to visit. It has more or less left behind its World War II past. You can still see some museums about the past. But modern Warsaw loves its craft beer and youll find young people having fun at the citys hip bars and nightclubs. Plus the cobbled streets look just like those picture postcards. Dont miss Warsaw its one of the best affordable destinations in Europe.

Cesky Kumlov, Czech Republic

Beautiful Prague is probably on your bucket list. But while youre on a budget and in the Czech Republic, we suggest you check out Cesky Krumlov. This is a beautiful little riverside town with the same red roofs youll see in Prague. Plus it has a castle complex that is completely free to visit! Food is quite cheap in the city, and if youre staying at a hostel or joining a tour, you may be able to enjoy free drinks. This town is three hours by train from Prague. You can enjoy a day here for just 32 USD!

Kiev, Ukraine

Ukraine is a fascinating country, and Kiev one of the best affordable destinations in Europe. If you travel in Europe with an adventurous spirit, you should make your way to relatively remote Kiev. This city has been one of the cheapest cities in Europe for years. A backpacker can get by on less than $30 a day in Kiev. Doing what? Well, theres gold-domed churches, cycling in Golosiyivsky Forest, farmers markets to explore, offbeat buildings in Sculptures Alley to take selfies with, local handicrafts to buy, see the worlds smallest book at the Museum of Miniatures, and more. Do you still need convincing?

Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzeghovina

This part of Europe has come out of its troubled past. Its a great time to go. Sarajevo is set deep in the mountains, so the journey to get there is bound to be rewarding. Youll find its one of the safest cities in Europe today! Sarajevo is small, very old, with people of different religions living together. Its small enough to walk or bike around. There is a lot to see, from the Old Town with cobbled streets, to the lovely Academy of Fine Arts, white marble cemeteries, street markets, bridges, museums, and lovely views from the surrounding hills. Its easy to travel here for less than $30 a day!

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is cheap if you stay away from touristy places around the river. But this rule applies everywhere. In gorgeous, romantic Budapest on the river Danube, there are free walking tours, free architectural tours of Castle Hill, a colorful Jewish Quarter you dont need to spend anything to experience, Hungarian souvenirs to buy in Great Market and much more. All for a little over $25 a day of your carefully rationed travel money!

Belgrade, Serbia

Belgrade was also troubled in the 90s, but its peaceful now. Like Budapest, this city also sits on the Danube river though its a lot more humble-looking city than Budapest. But it does have some striking buildings like the fortress, its beaches, its chapels and cathedrals, the Avala Tower with its beautiful views over the city, and more. We deliberately chose the picture above to show a side of Belgrave with lots of history and character that you may fall in love with.

Bucharest, Romania

Romania is the country of gypsies, Dracula and mysterious castles, right? Surprise, surprise, its a lot more than that! When you travel in Europe, try to make it a point to visit Bucharest, the capital of Romania. Its an energetic modern city with a lot of old architecture, churches, villas and trendy cafes rubbing shoulders. A visit to the crazy Palace of Parliament, which is the largest government building in the world, will alone make a visit to the city worthwhile!

Krakow, Poland

Krakow has always been of the best affordable destinations in Europe. Youll find prices of food, drinks, nightlife is very cheap here. So much so, that you can enjoy a day in Krakow for less than $25! Plus, the city has excellent old architecture, like the Wawel Castle and the medieval Rynek Glowny square, and its only an hour away from the must-visit camp of Auschwitz.

Sofia, Bulgaria

Sofia is one of the best affordable destinations in Europe. The prices are extremely reasonable you can stay at the cheapest hostel in the city for less than $7 a night! Flights from other major European cities can be a little expensive because the city is out of the way. So its best to go there if youre traveling for a while in Europe. Sofia is best enjoyed like a local. Just walk around, look at the architecture and enjoy local foods like boza and baklava.

In a free trade zone in Antalya, Turkey, 80 women workers of FMC Novamed are in strike for almost a year now, since September 26th, 2006. They allege not only low wages but also severe abuses on FMC’s part.

Novamed, founded in 2001, is a factory managed by Turkish capitalists and located in the free trade zone in Antalya, Turkey. 95% of its workers are women. It is owned by Fresenius Medical Care (FMC), which is an international corporation with its headquarters in Germany. Wikinews interviews Rocky De La Fuente, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Wikinews interviews Rocky De La Fuente, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Thursday, March 31, 2016

Businessman Rocky De La Fuente took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

The 61-year-old De La Fuente resides in San Diego, California, grew up in Tijuana, and owns multiple businesses and properties throughout the world. Since getting his start in the automobile industry, De La Fuente has branched out into the banking and real estate markets. Despite not having held or sought political office previously, he has been involved in politics, serving as the first-ever Hispanic superdelegate to the 1992 Democratic National Convention.

De La Fuente entered the 2016 presidential race last October largely due to his dissatisfaction with Republican front-runner Donald Trump. He argues he is a more accomplished businessman than Trump, and attacks Trump as “a clown,” “a joke,” “dangerous,” and “in the same category as Hitler.” Nevertheless, De La Fuente’s business background begets comparisons with Trump. The Alaskan Midnight Sun blog described him as the Democrats’ “own Donald Trump.”

While receiving only minimal media coverage, he has campaigned actively, and according to the latest Federal Election Commission filing, loaned almost US$ 4 million of his own money to the campaign. He has qualified for 48 primary and caucus ballots, but has not yet obtained any delegates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Thus far, according to the count at The Green Papers, De La Fuente has received 35,406 votes, or 0.23% of the total votes cast. He leads among the many lesser-known candidates but trails both Senator Bernie Sanders who has received nearly 6.5 million votes and front-runner Hillary Clinton who has just shy of 9 million votes.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, De La Fuente discusses his personal background, his positions on political issues, his current campaign for president, and his political future.

Augusten Burroughs on addiction, writing, his family and his new book

Augusten Burroughs on addiction, writing, his family and his new book

I had an unofficial phone call from Gay Talese last Tuesday. He had just flown back from Colombia and he was cranky. “I’m happy to do an interview with you,” he said, “but what the hell could you ask me that’s not already out there? Have you even bothered to look?!”

“Jeez, Mr. Talese, lots of things,” was my response. I lied. The truth is that when I call people to interview them, I do not have a set of preconceived questions. My agenda is to talk to them and gain a sense of who they are; to flesh them out as humans. To find out what they think about the world around them at that moment. With Gay Talese I had little interest in talking about Frank Sinatra Has a Cold and with Augusten Burroughs I had little interest in discussing Running with Scissors. I want to know what they think about things outside of the boxes people have placed them in.

With a memoirist like Burroughs, even this is a challenge. What parts of his life he has not written about himself, other interviewers have strip-mined. When we met for dinner at Lavagna in the East Village, I explained to Augusten this issue. I suggested we make the interview more of a conversation to see if that would be more interesting. “Instead of you in the catbird seat,” I said, “let’s just talk.”

We struck an instant rapport. What set out to be an hour and half interview over dinner had turned into four hours of discussion about our lives similarly lived. I removed half of the interview: the half that focused on me.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s conversation with writer Augusten Burroughs.

Earn Profits Through Internet Marketing Affiliate Programs

Posted on Monday, September 19, 2022 in Design Agency

By Merv Stevens

A lot of people are now making money through the internet. With the whole world facing global crisis and many countries experiencing economic problems, most people are now developing and making new ways to make money at home through home-based businesses and other ventures to increase their monthly income. Through the wide use of computers and internet in the world, people can now find various ways to make money online while at home. One of the most effective and easiest ways to make money online is through internet marketing affiliate programs. These programs are very profitable for website owners as well as online business companies.

The first step to start earning through internet marketing affiliate programs is creating your own website. Building a unique and effective website can be very technical and needs proper investment in order for the site to really gain visitors and generate profit. However, with the recent developments in internet services and technology, setting up a website online is now much easier due to many online sites and applications that help people create websites in only a few steps.

People can also hire or ask help from the professionals who know how to create online websites. Before making a website, find a good niche or the most popular subjects among the internet users. When the website is created, gain visitors or web traffic to your site by promoting your website and regularly updating it with information: articles, blogs and other promotional items to make your website rich in content. After effectively promoting your site and gaining significant amounts of web traffic, submit your site to the search engines. Look for the reputable and common advertisement programs like Google AdWords and other internet merchants that are looking for affiliate marketers to promote their products online.

After building and promoting the website, start earning profits by choosing the appropriate internet marketing affiliate program. There are numerous advertisement programs that website owners can choose from that would be both profitable for the affiliate marketer and to the online merchant as well.

Most common and popular types of affiliate advertisement programs are the Pay Per Impression, Pay Per Click, Pay Per Lead and the Pay Per Sale advertisement schemes. Pay Per Impression has the cheapest value among other online advertisement programs. The website generates profits by allowing the banner of the online merchant to be displayed on the affiliate marketer’s website.

Website owners can also earn profits through Pay Per Click method. The online merchant pays the website owner or the affiliate marketer when the visitor clicks the company or the online merchant’s banner that is posted on the affiliate’s website.

Pay Per Lead generates profit for the website owner when the visitors click the company’s banner and sign up for features required by the online merchant, like signing up for membership.

Lastly is the Pay Per Sale advertisement program where both the online merchant and the affiliate marketer earn profit. The company promoted by the website owner pays the affiliate marketer when a visitor clicks the online merchant’s banner and buys the products being sold on the merchant’s website. This is the most profitable among the affiliate advertisement programs but also the trickiest. To ensure a greater likelihood of a sale website owners should research well and choose the best types of product to advertise and effectively promote the product to visitors.

Gene mutation produces autism-like traits in mice

">
Gene mutation produces autism-like traits in mice
Posted on Sunday, September 18, 2022 in Uncategorized

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

By causing the mutation of one specific gene, researchers have produced mice with two frequently encountered behavioral traits of persons diagnosed with autism. Autism commonly affects the ability to interact socially and is associated with repetitive behavior. The finding was reported in the March 20 online edition of Nature.

Using mice, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Duke University mutated one of the genes associated with autism, known as shank3, a gene that controls the production of the shank3 protein present in the brain. Mice that were given this mutation exhibited repetitive behavior and avoided social interactions with the mice around them.

According to MIT Professor Guoping Feng: “Our study demonstrated that Shank3 mutation in mice lead to defects in neuron-neuron communications.”

Shank3 protein are found in synapses within the brain. Synapses allow brain cells (called neurons) to communicate with each other. The mutation in the mouse gene interfered with this communication, apparently producing the subsequent autism-like traits. Researchers believe their work demonstrates the important role of shank3 in the functioning of brain circuits that determine behavior.

While hundreds of genes have been linked to autism in human patients, only a small percentage have been linked to shank3. Professor Feng hypothesizes that disruptions of other genes that act on the production of brain proteins affecting synaptic communication may also be related to autistic behavior. If this disruption is real, Feng claims that treatments could be developed to correct synaptic function for any defective synaptic protein in an autistic patient.

Feng continued; “These findings and the mouse model now allow us to figure out the precise neural circuit defects responsible for these abnormal behaviours, which could lead to novel strategies and targets for developing treatment.”

About one in 110 children in the U.S., and at least one in 100 in UK, have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, for which there is currently no effective cure.

Many Rc Car Interesting Facts And Evolution

Posted on Thursday, September 15, 2022 in Helicopter

Time ago, the so-called rc car models, were made for a fraction of the cost in foreign markets, the first drones were big and were manufactured by hand and used in whole rc tech standard material, come bearing OS engines and radios Graupner. The first Spanish drones had limited use to the visual range and were therefore useful only short-range artillery, but companies are driven by the need began to experiment with more powerful computers, the only way to increase the impact was to increase the size and power station, but this was not enough.

The emergence of programmable automatic rc car pilots and the development of open projects like the Paparazzi caused an explosion in the possibilities of these devices and some Spanish companies have taken advantage of to develop a proprietary technology both in the field of software and the aircraft themselves.

Endless applications of automatic model rc car. – It is not just about artifacts of millions of dollars and military equipment made in USA whose best-known model is the Predator modelers, just as airplanes. These devices are currently used for applications traditionally using aircraft or real cars and also where these were not used because they are not profitable or where the environment was dangerous for the pilot. Imagine in a forest fire or in fog or storm. Currently used in agriculture and in meteorology, photographic surveillance of public works, communications and whatever is done faster and cheaper from up there from here down.

Today, the many rc car designs are not just business object more or less craft companies, some are allied with technologists and are collaborating to develop more and more ambitious applications and exist in the American and European landscape to exploit these ambitious projects.

First of all we verify the extent of the radio with the engine running, obviously someone must hold the model, or we must remove the propeller to the engine to avoid flying off, which seems silly, but it happened. The first test should be very short, and serve only for the model trimmer, practice approach, down to check the temperature of the components, and determining rc car battery discharge. If we change the diameter, its path, or just the make or model, we must make a short drive back to verify that no component is overheating, and the pack has been downloaded. If we change the engine, we check again and autonomy not to overheat the components.

Inaugural African Protected Areas Congress closes

Thursday, July 28, 2022

The inaugural African Protected Areas Congress hosted in Kigali, Rwanda, closed on Saturday with delegates adopting the Kigali Call to Action, committing countries to greater investments in the conservation of nature.

The conference ran from July 18-23, and was organised by Rwanda, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the African Wildlife Foundation, with the aim of discussing the challenges and opportunities in the conservation of nature and wildlife across Africa. Over 2300 delegates were present representing countries, the private sector, indigenous groups and conservation organisations.

Initiatives included the launching of a Pan-African Conservation Trust, with African governments encouraged to approve its establishment. This would see a $200 billion pan-African trust fund created for the financing of all 8,500 of Africa’s protected areas in perpetuity.

Congress closed with delegates adopting the Kigali Call to Action, committing countries to spending 1% of their GDP on funding biodiversity programs, alongside increasing collaborations between the public and private sectors. The Call to Action also called for the strengthening of the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.

Bill restricting Post Office closures defeated in UK Parliament; MP tells Wikinews why she supported the bill
Posted on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 in Uncategorized

Thursday, March 20, 2008

Yesterday, the U.K. Labour Party successfully prevented a bill restricting the closure of post offices from being passed, although the governing Labour party only had a majority of 20 due to 19 of its MPs’ voting against the party line. One of these was Diane Abbott, who told Wikinews why she voted for the bill.

She told Wikinews: “Post offices are central spaces within a community.” She added that they provided invaluable services and a point of contact for vulnerable people. She also claimed they were more important in places like her constituency which has a large number of elderly people.

She added: “they are particularly important [in] places in areas like Hackney where there are fewer bank branches and a large elderly population who rely on the post office to collect their pensions.” She was “appalled” to hear of the Post Office closures in her constituency.

The Shadow Minister for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform Alan Duncan of the Conservative Party was also contacted by Wikinews. He directed Wikinews to his website for more information on his opinion. On his website he says that it is “simply not good enough” to allow post offices to close.
