Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

Fort Lee, Virginia adopts RAPIDGate for fast civilian access

Fort Lee, Virginia adopts RAPIDGate for fast civilian access
Posted on Monday, January 31, 2022 in Uncategorized

Sunday, July 8, 2007

The U.S. Army installation at Fort Lee in Virginia will begin using a program called RAPIDGate that will replace passes issued to non-military persons who regularly require access to the facility. The program will take effect July 10, when the practice of issuing 90-day passes to people who present a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance for the vehicle used for access ends. Those passes will be grandfathered out as they expire.

The RAPIDGate program for fast entry into Fort Lee replaces what was once access privileges performed by the installation itself, which came free of cost. The new outsourced program administered by Portland, Oregon-based Eid Passport, Inc. enhances security to the installation by performing background checks. Their service comes at a price. The screening process makes a ten-year felony background check, performs a check against terrorist and sexual offender watch lists, and does a social security cross reference to validate a person’s identity.

Qualified applicants are issued a pass that enables them to bypass inspection pits and use any of the facility’s seven gates for access. Businesses whose employees would benefit by this are required to contact the program provider and have “point of contact” persons who can validate an applicant’s employment. Enrollment in the program costs the business US$199. A pass for each employee of the business costs $159 annually. The pass for employees expires after a year, when a new background check is required by the program.

The program is a voluntary alternative for civilians to conform with new access policies mandated by the Department of Defense and the U.S. Army, according to an information pamphlet distributed by the base. A kiosk will be set up at Fort Lee to accept applications that process a photograph, social security number, and fingerprint.

Those without a RAPIDGate pass will need to enter the fort at locations where their vehicle can be inspected. A rigorous inspection involves armed guards asking the driver to place keys on the dash board, pop the hood and the trunk, open the glove box, and have all occupants exit the vehicle and open all doors, including the hood and trunk. While the vehicle is inspected inside, another guard uses a mirror attached to a wand to inspect under the chassis of the vehicle’s undercarriage.

Eid Passport, Inc. specializes in identity authentication and background screening. Fort Lee will be the 12th military installation out of an estimated 250 military installations on U.S soil to implement identity screening as part of new policies mandated by the Department of Defense (DoD).

“The pass contains no personal information,” said David Smith, the director of marketing for Eid Passport. It does contain a barcode which is scanned at entry. The RAPIDGate program database includes a biometric fingerprint that might be checked by the scanning device against the presenter of the pass in times of elevated security. The pass is also embedded with an active RFID transmitter. The pass is scanned on entry to the fort at the gate check point, but not upon exit. If the RFID transmitter works properly, movement into and out of the base will be recorded.

The Fort Lee pamphlet mentions a “a new mandate” by the DoD. That mention appears to be in reference to portion of the language found in an Instruction issued in October last year by the DoD that states, “Implement a verification process, whether through background checks or other similar processes, that enables the U.S. Government to attest to the trustworthiness of DoD contractors and sub-contractors.”

The Instruction stems from a Directive signed by President Bush in August of 2004. That Directive, from the Department of Homeland Security, says in part, “Wide variations in the quality and security of forms of identification used to gain access to secure Federal and other facilities where there is potential for terrorist attacks need to be eliminated.”

Fort Lewis in Washington state was the first U.S. military installation to adopt the RAPIDGate program as a test in 2004. Since then, Fort Sam Houston, Fort Carson, and Fort Bragg, among other installations have adopted the program.

“What happened at Fort Dix, [New Jersey], as we look at it, is a Fort Dix issue,” Laura Arenschield reported spokesman for the 18th Airborne, Tom McCollum, as saying in June. “That should not be taken as an invitation for someone to try it here at Fort Bragg, but (security) is a living, breathing entity. You have to constantly change it just to keep those who are trying to penetrate it on their toes.” The new security measures will go into effect at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, which is among the largest of domestic military bases, starting July 8.

Fuel leak prompts 17,000-vehicle recall by Toyota

Fuel leak prompts 17,000-vehicle recall by Toyota
Posted on Thursday, January 27, 2022 in Uncategorized

Sunday, June 27, 2010

Toyota announced on Friday that it will recall around 17,000 Lexus vehicles in response to risks of the fuel tank in the cars leaking after a collision.

The Lexus HS 250h model was subjected to the recall following a US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation. Despite previously passing Toyota safety inspections, the conclusions of an NHTSA sub-contracted investigator were that; when the vehicles in question collided with an object at more than fifty-miles-per hour, more than 142 grams of fuel, the maximum allowed by US law, leaked from the crashed car.

According to Toyota, further tests did not show any additional failure of the fuel tank.

In response to the findings, Toyota issued a recall of all affected vehicles, since the company had no solution immediately available. The recall includes 13,000 cars already sold, as well as another 4,000 still at dealerships.

Toyota says it plans to conduct further tests to determine the cause of the leak. A Toyota spokesman, Brian Lyons, said that the company was “still working to determine what the root cause of the condition is.” It’s still unclear when exactly the recall will take place, or when dealerships will be allowed to sell this model again. Lyons said that Toyota is “working feverishly to get this resolved as soon as possible.”

Toyota isn’t aware of any accidents stemming from the leaking fuel tank in the affected vehicles, first introduced in the summer of 2009.

Understanding Payment Cards: Credit &Amp; Debit

Understanding Payment Cards: Credit & Debit

by

Izzy Evans

Whether you are established in the working world or just starting out it is always important to keep on top of your finances and to understand what payment methods are available to you. Using the right type of payment method can save you time and effort but can also offer extra benefits and added security. Although cash is still a hugely popular payment method, especially for smaller purchases, many people prefer to use a credit card or a debit card. But what is a credit card and a debit card and what is the difference between them? This article aims to provide an introduction to credit and debit cards and offer some tips about when and how you should use them.

A debit card is linked to your current account and is a way for you to electronically access the funds. The debit card really began to take off in the mid-1980s when banks started issuing them to try and reduce the overuse of cheques, which are expensive for the banks to process. With a debit card you can use a cash machine to quickly and easily withdraw funds from your bank account. You can also use a debit card to pay for items in a shop, or for most types of purchase, e.g. in restaurants, for tickets or at a petrol station. One thing you will have to bear in mind is that because the money is taken from your account you will need to make sure you have the money in your account to cover the purchase. If you don t have the money but you still want to make the transaction you will need to have an agreed overdraft with your bank. Where possible try not to go into your overdraft as you will often have to pay interest on the amount you used. When you use a debit card a hold is put on the amount you are trying to spend and the transaction is then sent to the banks involved and the funds are transferred.

Debit cards are hugely useful and it has been estimated that we use our debit cards around six times a week. They are best used to purchase everyday items that are not too expensive but are also a simple way to access cash. Although you can use a credit card to withdraw cash it is not a sensible idea as there are fees for doing this and you will be charged interest from the date that you withdrew the money. A debit card is best used to withdraw cash as you will be taking out your own money, and not borrowing it, and in most cases it is free to withdraw money at a cash machine with a debit card. Generally you should use a debit card for purchases that you know you can afford to pay for from your own money.

A credit card is similar to a debit card in that it can also be used to make purchases. However, there are several key differences between credit and debit cards. A debit card is linked to your bank account and any withdrawals or transactions that you make will be deducted from the total in your bank account. A credit card, on the other hand, is not linked to your account and is essentially a way of borrowing money from your bank. When you sign up for a credit card you will be given a specific credit limit. This limit designates how much money you are able to borrow every month. When you buy something with your credit card the cost is added to your credit card statement, you receive this statement at the end of the month which tells you the total amount that you owe. You can either pay the full amount or you can spread the repayments over a period of time. It is advisable to pay off your credit card bills as soon as possible because the sooner you do the less interest you will have to pay.

Credit cards are generally most appropriate for bigger purchases – this is because you can choose to pay back the money over a period of time making it easier to deal with and because there is added protection with a credit card. If you purchase something expensive that turns out to be defective or if an internet site that you have bought something from turns out to be dodgy then most credit card companies will provide purchase protection. The credit card company will be jointly liable with the merchant to ensure that the item you bought is as described. You can use a credit card to pay for holiday flights or to rent a car, but some people do use their credit cards for smaller purchases. It can be useful to pay for your petrol or your weekly shop and pay off your credit card bill straightaway as you will not have to pay any more interest and you can benefit from any rewards offered by the credit card company.

Most credit card providers will offer certain rewards and offers in return for using their credit card service. For example some retailers and supermarkets will offer discounts or vouchers when you use their credit card. For example some retailers give you a certain amount of points for the amount that you have spent on the card, these points can then be turned into a voucher when you have accrued enough. Some credit card companies offer cash-back deals while credit cards offered by major airlines may give you air miles. The main thing to remember, however, is to not get sucked in by the variety of rewards on offer and to always try to pay off your bill as soon as possible.

The body of former Manchester United player, George Best, has arrived in Northern Ireland. It was flown into RAF Aldergrove, on a chartered plane accompanied by his son, Calum, and his agent, Phil Hughes. Bests Family, including his father Dickie were waiting at the runway of RAF base in County Antrim.

Mr.Bests body was then driven in a black herse along a 20-mile route to the home of Best’s father, Dickie, in the Cregagh Estate in east Belfast, where it will be kept overnight.

Up to 500,000 people are expected to line the streets to Stormont, the Northern Ireland Parliament buildings, where a public funeral ceremony for the former Manchester United and Northern Ireland football player will be held tomorrow.

Mr Best died at the Cromwell Hospital in London last Friday afternoon, aged 59. A private family service will be held at Best’s Fathers home, which has been turned into a shrine to his son. Then a service will take place in the Great Hall at Stormont, before Best is buried in a private family service beside his mother Ann at Roselawn Cemetery. Among the people attending the private ceremony will be Best’s lifelong friend Denis Law, Harry Gregg and Derek Dougan.

Russian astrologist sues NASA for Deep Impact test

Russian astrologist sues NASA for Deep Impact test
Posted on Thursday, January 27, 2022 in Uncategorized

Monday, July 4, 2005

Russian astrologist Marina Bai has filed suit in Moscow asking for 8.7 billion rubles (311 million U.S. dollars) because, she claims, the NASA Deep Impact mission damaged her business by altering her ability to provide accurate horoscopes, harmed her “system of spiritual values,” and will “interfere with the natural life of the universe.”

“It is obvious that elements of the comet’s orbit, and correspondingly the ephemeris, will change after the explosion, which interferes with my astrology work and distorts my horoscope,” Bai was quoted in the daily newspaper, Izvestia.

NASA has refuted similar accusations by pointing out that this impact is only a new addition to many previous collisions already on the comet.

On July 4, NASA successfully crashed a probe into the Tempel 1 comet in hopes the debris kicked up in the resulting explosion could shed light in the building blocks of the early solar system.

The lawsuit, originally filed in June, has not yet been scheduled for an initial hearing, according to Russian authorities.

What To Do When Your Girlfriend Wants A Break}

Posted on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 in Yoga

Submitted by: Anthony Malibu

A ‘break’ is a lot different from a breakup, but it could easily turn into one. Find out what to do when your girlfriend asks for some time apart, and how you can turn the situation INSTANTLY around.

So she wants a ‘break’… your girlfriend’s words probably came as a pretty big shock to you, leaving you floundering helplessly while you wondered what to do next.

So what exactly did you do? Did you try to talk her out of the break? List a bunch of reasons why you should stay together? Beg? Plead? Look for anything that could change her mind?

In the end, you probably walked away dejectedly and agreed to give your girlfriend ‘some space’. After all, you didn’t want to lose her… right?

What It Means When Your Girlfriend Wants a Break Instead of a Breakup

If you already agreed to some half-assed ‘break’ from your relationship, you’ve already put yourself in a very poor position. Your girlfriend now has all the power over what happens next: she decides

when

to call you,

what

to say to you, and how much contact you can have with her. Worst of all, she’s the one who decides when the break is over – NOT you.

Right now, it might seem as if your girlfriend is laying the groundwork for a future breakup. This is the preliminary break, where she gets to let you down easy before finally ditching you completely. And unfortunately, that’s not too far from the truth.

Before going forward however, you need to understand

why

your girlfriend wants a break instead of a breakup. And the reason for this, put as simply as possible, is that she’s just not sure.

To sum it up? Your girlfriend DOESN’T want ‘space’, or ‘breathing room’, or ‘time to think about things’. Giving your romance some space isn’t going to allow it to miraculously heal itself, or somehow get better simply because you miss each other. What your girlfriend really wants right now is for you to stay put while she goes out and sees if she can find something or someone better.

This is the harsh reality of the temporary ‘break’; it often becomes permanent because guys give their girlfriends a complete license to do what they want. Can you call her? No, because then you’re suddenly smothering her. Can you email or text-message her? No, because you’re not ‘respecting her boundries’. It’s almost ridiculous how many guys fall for this, humbly stepping back and allowing their girlfriends to do whatever they want, all for the fear of losing them for good.

What You Should Do When Your Girl Wants a Break Instead of a Breakup

Want your girlfriend back in your arms again? Want to stop the break from becoming a breakup? Then it’s time to man up and seize back control. It’s time to stop laying down and nodding your head in humble agreement, while your girlfriend loses every last shred of respect she has for you.

When your girlfriend wants a break you have only one good option: give it to her. In fact, give her even MORE of a break than she really wants. When she approaches you with the subject of taking some time apart, tell her:

“Listen, I’ve been thinking and you’re right. We haven’t been good lately. Let’s just both go do our own thing. No hard feelings, and I wish you the best.”

This approach is the exact opposite of what your girlfriend

expects

you to do. Right now she wants you to stick around and ‘be there’ for her while she explores other options. She wants you to leave her alone for a while, but she wants you within easy reach. The last thing she wants is for you to go away and start doing your own thing.

By not only agreeing with but embracing her idea for a break? Suddenly your girlfriend is faced with the prospect of losing you. Instead of sitting around like a puppy-dog waiting for her to return, you’re going to walk away and get on with your life. This leaves her completely alone… it takes away her safety net and removes any other options. Going out isn’t going to be so much fun for her now, knowing that if she turns to look over her shoulder you’re no longer going to be there.

Going a step further, remove yourself from your ex’s life completely. Don’t answer the phone when she calls, or respond to her text messages. Let her worry that you’ve already found something or someone new, and make your girlfriend come running back to you rather than you sitting home alone, in misery, waiting for her to let you know when the break is over.

In the end, a ‘taking a break’ is nothing but pure selfishness. Agree to it, and you’re dooming the future of your relationship. If you want to avoid a breakup and get back with your girlfriend, you’ll need to take actions that force consequences on her part. Sitting back and hoping she somehow comes around is NEVER a good plan.

What To Do If Your Girlfriend Already Put Your Relationship on a Break

Now if you’ve already agreed to take some time apart, try not to panic. There are methods and techniques for applying the above philosophy, and for getting your girlfriend to both want and need you back. Learn which reconnection techniques will work in your own specific situation, and get back on the road to being a couple again. The longer you leave yourself in relationship limbo, the harder it will be to win back your ex.

Feared toll of Indonesian floods, landslides up to 130; dozens missing as bridge swept away

Feared toll of Indonesian floods, landslides up to 130; dozens missing as bridge swept away
Posted on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 in Uncategorized

Thursday, December 27, 2007

Heavy rains in Indonesia yesterday triggered widespread flooding and landslides across the nation. It has emerged that last night a bridge was swept away by the swollen river it stretched across, leaving around 40 to 50 people missing in Madiun, East Java. Meanwhile, the total toll of those known or feared to be dead has reached 130.

According to local police chief Supardi in a telephone conversation with Xinhua the flood waters weakened a foundation, resulting in the collapse. At least twenty motorcyclists, car drivers and passengers are thought to be dead, but as of midnight, no bodies had been recovered. However, three bikes have been retrieved. 100 rescuers have been dispatched to the scene. Continuing heavy rain forced the search to be abandoned temporarily.

Java as a whole is the worst affected island; in addition to the bridge collapse most of the landslides occurred in two Central Java districts. Health ministry official Rustam Pakaya told reporters that at least 28,000 people have been forced to abandon their homes in central Java, although exact figures are not yet available. The Red Cross commented that 45,000 East Javanese people have been similarly displaced. Thousands are seeking shelter in mosques and other public buildings.

Landslides buried houses and made roads impassable, while hundreds police officers, military personnel, local officials and volunteers have been digging with farm tools and even their hands to search for survivors. Heavy machinery is available but the road conditions have prevented it arriving at the areas where it is required. Jakarta has dispatched aid in the form of five tonnes of biscuits and instant meals, ten tonnes of baby food and multiple boats.

Heru Aji Pratomo, head of the disaster management centre in the worst-hit district of Karanganyar has confirmed the recovery of twelve more bodies. This brings the total confirmed death toll in the area to 48. He said that most bodies were recovered from three metre deep mud and required heavy digging machinery to retrieve. 28 remain missing.

Local resident Siswo told AFP “Suddenly I felt my house shaking, and I thought it was an earthquake. When I got outside, I saw that the houses next to mine were already covered by earth,” and that it struck twelve neighbouring houses.

In the next district, Wonogiri, disaster management centre head Sri Mubadi told reporters they had retrieved two more bodies, reaching a total of six, with eleven more missing. He also confirmed that they currently have no access to heavy equipment.

In Tawangmangu about 1,000 rescuers were also searching for bodies and survivors without the aid of heavy machinery. Three more bodies were retrieved today.

Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir toured a Karanganyar village, at which time he commented that he felt the disaster had been caused as a form of divine revenge, saying “This was likely caused by immoral acts going on here,” and “This could be a lesson to be learned.” The 69-year-old served two years after being linked to the 2002 Bali bombings, before having his conviction overturned last year.

Chalid Muhammad, director of Walhi, an Indonesian environmental group, had a different opinion. “For five consecutive years landslides and floods have occurred in Java, claiming many lives. The main trigger is ecological destruction caused by deforestation, forest conversions and chaotic spatial planning,” Chalid told Reuters.

“There have been no adequate efforts by the government to protect the people from disasters. When the landslides happened officials were on holiday and there was no access of heavy equipment to the affected areas.”
