Anna Ayala, the Las Vegas woman who claims to have found the notorious “chili finger” at a Wendy’s outlet in San Jose, California, has filed lawsuits against other businesses, according to researchers at the Associated Press. Her previous court battles included the national El Pollo Loco chicken-chain, a previous employer, and even General Motors.

Ayala successfully won her suit for medical expenses against El Pollo Loco, after her daughter Genesis contracted salmonella poisoning from eating at the restaurant. However, Ayala lost another suit in 2000 claiming that a wheel fell off her car.

Ayala’s original account of the incident spoke “emotionally and with disgust” to the San Jose Mercury News when she described it to the paper.

“Lies, lies, lies, that’s all I am hearing. They should look at Wendy’s. What are they hiding? Why are we being victimized again and again?” Ayala recently told The Associated Press. Ayala is now in her Las Vegas home, avoiding reporters.

“It doesn’t prove anything,” family spokesman Ken Bono told the San Francisco Chronicle. “My mom has 10 lawsuits. A lot of people have lawsuits. Why would she sue for money? She has plenty of money,” he said.

Nick Muyo, a spokesman for the San Jose Police department, said not to expect new information in the case for at least a week.

“We just want to step back and take a deep breath,” Muyo told Knight Ridder Newspapers. “From a law enforcement point of view, once you establish it is a human finger, you have to wonder is this a case of industrial accident or is this a case of unreported homicide,” he said.

Las Vegas police searched Anna Ayala’s home on Wednesday, retrieving a cooler and other effects from her home, such as a makeup case.

Despite the incident, which has dramatically reduced sales at Northern California Wendy’s outlets, die-hard Wendy’s fans are still turning up for lunch, even at the outlet where the finger was found, at 1405 Monterey Highway, just south of downtown San Jose.

“We’ve eaten here for years,” a police officer told the San Francisco Chronicle under the condition that he remain anonymous. “They’re very nice people. When we work Spartan Stadium, we always eat here,” he said.

San Jose City Council candidate Andrew Diaz still eats the chili. And he witnessed the finger discovery.

“I walked away real slow,” Diaz told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I didn’t want any commotion,” he said.

Students promote Thailand’s tourism with their paintbrushes – and give proceeds to charity

An innovative “Children helping Children” project has been launched by local volunteers and students of a school in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. Named the Chiang Mai Charity Calendar 2008 it serves the dual purpose of promoting their 700-year-old city, and supporting disadvantaged children.

Self-financed with no advertising, and produced by schoolchildren for a charitable cause, it is probably the first of its kind to surface in the travel industry, and something normally only in the domain of National Tourism Organizations.

The objectives are:

  1. Initially, to encourage well-off children to help poor kids in a ‘create and donate’ concept, using art pieces instead of money.
  2. To put Chiang Mai on the world map as a prime destination in its own right for leisure, conferences, medical tourism, high quality purchases, sports, education, studies, and not a stopover, as many perceive it to be.
  3. To raise funds for disadvantaged Thai children through sales of the calendar.
  4. To further motivate the kids who donated the paintings to continue doing worthwhile things – by letting them experience their own success, first hand.’

The students, all from Prem Tinsulononda International School, were invited to create original paintings depicting why “Chiang Mai is a Wonderful Place to Live”. This resulted in 93 entries from all ages and nationalities, thirteen of which were selected for inclusion in the not-for-profit 40-page 14-month full colour desk calendar. The production contains around 2000 words of original text, highlighting the city’s rich history, and relative inaccessibility for centuries, e.g.:

“The railway line did not reach the city until 1921, and the last stretch of paved road was not completed until 1972 … extraordinary to think that in the previous year the Apollo 15 crew had already driven vehicles on the moon”

It points out that in 2005, Travel+Leisure readers voted Chiang Mai into fifth place in the list of world’s best cities, acknowledges that the Asian economic building boom has had a negative impact, but adds:

“High buildings, highways and hypermarkets bow deferentially to antiquity, and in many cases their clumsy presence only serves to intensify the beauty of the city’s historical monuments – ancient chedis or graceful spires gloriously upstaging trendy modern architecture”

This colourful and useful product will carry its promotional message into homes and offices all around the world, and has been welcomed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand Director Northern Office Region 1, Mr. Junnapong Saranak, who in his introductory message in the calendar, remarks that it is unique, and ‘may even become a collector’s item’

Experiment on frozen sperm raises hopes of “restoring” extinct mammals

Experiment on frozen sperm raises hopes of “restoring” extinct mammals

According to Japanese and American scientists, healthy offspring have resulted from the injection of sperm into female mice from male mice that have been in a deep freeze for 15 years. The mice, as a whole, were kept frozen in temperatures of -20 degrees celsius.

Scientists at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research Bioresource Center which is located in Tsukuba, Japan, say that cryogenic techniques were not used and that the mice were kept in a freezer.

Scientists also say that the sperm was not alive when it was thawed out. At least one out of every five females that were injected with the sperm, gave birth to healthy offspring which are also fertile.

“Obviously, those frozen [sperm] were all dead in the conventional sense. Motionless sperm had no chance whatsoever of fertilising in vivo or in vitro. Nevertheless, some of these, if not all, were … genomically intact, because they were able to produce apparently normal offspring,” said the researchers.

The idea behind the experiment is that scientists say that the results now make it possible to bring back prehistoric animals or extinct animals such as the woolly mammoth, but because any fully intact body found would have been frozen for over 10,000 years and would likely be too damaged organisms and bacterias. Endangered species such as elephants could also be reproduced, but scientists also say that the chances of an experiment like that of being successful are still “slim.”

“Restoration of extinct species could be possible if male individuals are found in permafrost. If sperm of extinct mammalian species, for example the woolly mammoth, can be retrieved from animal bodies that were kept frozen for millions of years in permanent frost, live animals might be restored by injecting them into oocytes [eggs] from females of closely related species,” said Dr. Narumi Ogonuki, head of the team who made the discovery.

Study says to clean your sponge, microwave it

Study says to clean your sponge, microwave it
Posted on Sunday, August 29, 2021 in Uncategorized

Thursday, January 25, 2007

Studies done on germs and bacteria performed by researchers at the University of Florida show that a dirty kitchen sponge can be cleaned and “sterilized” by microwaving it for 2 minutes, but researchers warn to wet the sponge first.

“People often put their sponges and scrubbers in the dishwasher, but if they really want to decontaminate them and not just clean them, they should use the microwave,” said the professor who was in charge of the study that discovered the results, Gabriel Bitton.

“Basically what we find is that we could knock out most bacteria in two minutes. The microwave is a very powerful and an inexpensive tool for sterilization,” added Bitton.

The sponges that researchers studied, were placed in “raw wastewater” and then put into a microwave to be “zapped,” according to Bitton. The wastewater was a “witch’s brew of fecal bacteria, viruses, protozoan parasites and bacterial spores, including Bacillus cereus spores,” said Bitton.

Researchers say that at least 99% of the bacteria, viruses, spores and parasites in kitchen spongees can be destroyed or “inactivated” by simply microwaving the wet sponge, on the highest power, for two minutes.

Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau
Posted on Saturday, August 28, 2021 in Uncategorized

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.

Speakers Are Key To Every Home Theater Installation In Woodinville, Wa

Posted on Friday, August 27, 2021 in Audio Visual System

byadmin

Having access to a high-quality home theater can make life a lot more entertaining and enjoyable. A well-designed, properly installed home theater can enable experiences that match or even exceed those typical of commercial facilities. When it comes time for a Home Theater Installation in Woodinville WA, audio will always be an especially important issue. There are a variety of basic types of speakers that can be installed to allow a system to produce theater-quality sound at home.

Choosing the Best Types of Speakers for Any Home Theater

The natural point of focus for just about Home Theater Installation in Woodinville WA will be the television or other display that hosts images. At the same time, the sound is every bit as important when it comes to creating immersive, impressive theater experiences at home.

While the quality and power of a theater system’s receiver or amplifier will always be an issue, speakers contribute a great deal to the character and naturalness of the sounds they emit. There are a number of general kinds of speakers on the market today, some combination of which will typically be most appropriate to particular rooms. They include:

• Towers.

• Standing tall enough that their most directional elements line up with the ears of seated listeners, tower-style speakers are often found on the front ranks of home theater systems. Many towers contain three or more drivers and are capable of producing essentially full-range sound.

• Satellites.

• Smaller satellite-style speakers are most often used today to generate sound at the sides or the back of a room. High-quality bookshelf satellite speakers can just as well take up the front corners of a home theater setup, as well.

• Center channel.

• Typically seated directly below or above the display, the center channel speaker will be responsible for reproducing speech and other particularly essential sounds.

• Subwoofer.

• Most home theater systems will incorporate a boxlike subwoofer that is tasked with generating low, rumbling, and thumping noises.

The Right Mix for Any Home

Experts can always select from speakers like these and others to suit any room and home theater system appropriately. Choosing the right complement of speakers for a home theater will go a long way toward enabling truly impressive experiences.
